An Open Letter To The Selectboard - Previously Emailed To All!
Dear Board Members,
We are writing to formally request reconsideration of the town's decision regarding the parcel of town-owned land situated behind the Island Falls Opera House. As the current owners of this historic building, we believe a compelling argument exists for transferring ownership of this land, aligning with the previously expressed intent of a prior Selectboard to transfer this parcel to the then-property owner. This prior decision, discussed by a former Selectboard member with Chris, was unfortunately hampered by the inability to contact the previous owner at the time.
This request transcends simple land acquisition; it is fundamentally about preserving a vital piece of Island Falls’ heritage and ensuring its continued contribution to the community's vibrancy. The Island Falls Opera House is more than a structure; it represents a tangible link to our past and holds immense potential for shaping our future. We believe granting this land transfer is in the best interest of the town.
The acquisition would serve several crucial purposes:
1. **Septic System Compliance:** The current lack of adequate land restricts the full utilization of the Opera House's upper theater. This parcel would enable the installation of a compliant septic system, addressing this critical impediment.
2. **Enhanced Parking Facilities:** The additional land would provide much-needed parking, benefiting both the Opera House and the wider community, particularly given its role as a central gathering space.
3. **Historic Preservation:** Transferring this land demonstrates a commitment to preserving a landmark building integral to Island Falls' history and culture. This action would significantly enhance the Opera House's potential for restoration and future use.
4. **Upholding Prior Selectboard Decision:** A prior Selectboard’s decision to transfer this land demonstrates its inherent value to the town. Given the previous inability to reach the owner, fulfilling this intention now is both fair and prudent.
We understand that this matter might not directly impact the daily lives of individual Selectboard members. However, we urge you to consider the broader, long-term implications for the town’s vitality. Thriving communities value their history and nurture their potential. Denying this request risks losing a valuable opportunity to revitalize a key part of Island Falls' identity due to bureaucratic inertia.
We acknowledge the existing community garden on this parcel and are prepared to explore options for its integration or relocation to ensure its continued presence while accommodating responsible development.
We would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this further at your earliest convenience, either during an upcoming Selectboard meeting or in a private meeting. Please let us know your availability. We remain committed to working collaboratively to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome for both the Opera House and the town of Island Falls. We have previously made this request without receiving sufficient consideration, and hope this matter can be addressed comprehensively.
Thank you for your time and dedication to our community.
Sincerely,
Chris & Stephanie Hartin - Owners, Island Falls Opera House
